Saffron, olibanum, and a smoky suede accord drive Babycat, YSL's 2022 entry in Le Vestiaire des Parfums, designed as a unisex skin-scent for unisex wear.
Composed by Dominique Ropion, Babycat sits inside YSL's haute parfumerie line alongside Tuxedo, Saharienne and Caftan. The brief: capture the locker-room intimacy of dressing rooms after a show, where saffron-warmed skin mingles with treated leather.
The opening is a pepper crackle: pink and black pepper laid over green elemi resin. As that lifts, the centre takes shape: olibanum smoke wraps around saffron, the saffron pulling slightly leathery rather than culinary. The drydown is the part that earned Babycat its cult signature: a vanilla-cedar-suede fusion that sits close to skin, animalic without being heavy.
Versatility is the wear-pattern. Cool weather brings out the spice. Warm weather pulls the suede forward. Officially marketed unisex; the suede-vanilla architecture reads softer on women, smokier on men.
