Peru Balsam

Peru Balsam fragrance note icon

Peru balsam is the resinous exudate of Myroxylon balsamum, a tropical tree native to Central America despite the misleading name. Harvesters score the trunk with vertical cuts and collect the dark, syrupy resin that seeps over the following weeks. The crude balsam smells warm, sweet, vanillic, slightly cinnamon-edged, with hints of chocolate and smoke that make it a natural anchor for amber-oriental bases. The note appears in Guerlain Shalimar, Caron Tabac Blond, and many heritage-leather compositions, and continues to feature in modern niche amber releases including Roja Parfums Britannia and Amouage Imitation. It pairs well with vanilla, labdanum, benzoin, and tobacco for autumn and winter wear. Browse Peru-balsam-led fragrances at the Peru balsam collection.
