Woody notes in perfumery cover a spectrum from dry and pencil-like to creamy and almost milky. As a family they give fragrance structure, warmth and staying power.
The category is a toolbox rather than a single material. Cedarwood (Juniperus virginiana and Cedrus atlantica) contributes dryness, sandalwood (Santalum species) adds creamy softness, vetiver brings smoky earthiness, guaiac wood adds sweet smoke, and oud supplies dark resinous weight. Modern perfumery also relies heavily on synthetic woody molecules such as Iso E Super, Cashmeran, Norlimbanol and Ambroxan, which extend naturals and add abstract, transparent wood effects.
Woods sit almost entirely in the base. Perfumers use them as the canvas for florals, to ground spices and amber, to temper gourmands, and to build the skin-close dry-downs that define modern masculine and unisex fragrance.
Woody fragrances perform well year-round. Lighter cedar and Iso E compositions read crisp in summer, while sandalwood and oud come into their own in autumn, winter and evening wear.
