Maison Francis Kurkdjian does not publish a classic top, heart and base pyramid for Baccarat Rouge 540. Instead it describes three "auras":

1. Air: jasmine accents with Hedione, a material the house describes as evoking fresh jasmine and adding an airy, luminous quality.
2. Fire: a saffron accord with ethyl maltol, a note the house describes as having gourmand facets.
3. Mineral: an accord evoking ambergris, built on Ambroxan, with dry woody tones.

Two details matter for the price question, because they are often reported the other way round.

The saffron is not natural saffron. The house states that natural saffron is not used in perfumery because it contains safrole, which the house calls a highly allergenic compound, so its effect is reproduced with one of its derivatives, saffronal. Claims that the price comes from real saffron threads do not match what the house says about its own formula.

The ambergris is an accord. Ambroxan, according to the house, is obtained from sclareol, a natural constituent of clary sage, and has gradually replaced ambergris in perfumery. The standard eau de parfum uses this accord rather than natural ambergris.

Why Baccarat Rouge 540 is so expensive

The house sets the price, and it is a luxury price. On Maison Francis Kurkdjian's own sites, at the time of writing (September 2026), the 70ml eau de parfum is US$360 in the United States and €265 in Europe, and the 70ml Extrait is €375 in Europe.

• Some materials are costly in general. For the Extrait, the house notes that Grandiflorum jasmine is very expensive because of its low yield of essential oil and must be harvested very early in the morning. That is a statement about the material, not a cost breakdown of the bottle.
