Who is Nishane?

Nishane was founded in Istanbul in 2012 by Mert Güzel and Murat Katran, who work as the house's creative directors rather than as perfumers. The brand describes itself as "the first and only Istanbul based niche perfume brand that is celebrated globally," and says its name "means mark, sign or symbol."

Istanbul runs through everything the house makes. In its own words, Nishane is "Inspired by the rooted traditions, modern vision and the cosmopolitan structure of Istanbul that has embraced so many civilizations." That shows in the stories behind the perfumes: a Rumi quote, a shadow-puppet character, an Anatolian folk song.

Nishane Ani

Nishane Ani is the house's vanilla, and one of the five perfumes Nishane names as its bestsellers. Nishane says it was "created under the inspiration of a famous Anatolian folk song called 'Sarı Gelin'," and named after the Ani Ruins, an ancient city now "included on UNESCO's World Heritage List." Launched in 2019, it was, in the brand's words, "the first reference launched in 2019 under the new theme 'NO BOUNDARIES'."

The brand lists bergamot, green notes, blue ginger and pink pepper at the top, blackcurrant, Turkish rose and cardamom at the heart, and patchouli, cedarwood, vanilla, benzoin, ambergris, musk and sandalwood in the base. On skin it moves from a bright, gingery opening to a warm, spiced vanilla. Nishane says it has become "an iconic scent" for perfume lovers.

Nishane Hacivat

Nishane Hacivat is Nishane's bright, woody chypre, launched in 2017. It is named after Hacivat, one of the two characters of Karagöz and Hacivat, the traditional Turkish shadow play, and the brand calls it "a tribute to elegance, kindness, competence, and love of art."

Its notes are bergamot, pineapple and grapefruit at the top, jasmine, patchouli and cedarwood at the heart, and clearwood, oakmoss and dry timberwood in the base. Nishane describes "the stimulating notes of pineapple and bergamot backed with the genuine woody notes."

Nishane Nefs

Nishane Nefs opened Nishane's Prestige Collection in 2019. The brand calls it "the line's flagship oriental scent" and describes "an East-meets-West portrait of refined luxury to sway even those who dislike oriental fragrances."

Nefs is rich. The brand lists honey, violet, sage, saffron and fig at the top, rose, osmanthus, geranium, jasmine and nutmeg at the heart, and amber, whiskey, oud, cinnamon, cedarwood, gurjum, leather and vanilla in the base. Nishane pictures it "Like a breeze blowing from the east across the Bosphorus." Pick it if you want honeyed rose and oud in a smooth, modern form. 50 ml, AED 1,900.

Nishane Fan Your Flames

Nishane Fan Your Flames, launched in 2016, belongs to the Rumi Collection and takes its name from a Rumi line: "Set your life on fire and seek those who fan your flames." The brand says it "Depicts a lovely night-out with the company of loved ones smoking shisha with coconut."

Its notes are simple and warm: coconut and rum at the top, tobacco and tonka bean at the heart, oakmoss and Chinese cedarwood in the base. The X versions are not stronger versions. Nishane made them "in collaboration with celebrated perfumers" as new takes on its five bestsellers, and they are Extraits de Parfum like the originals. The brand says Ani X opens with "a richer burst of juicy citrus" than Ani, for example.
