Ex Nihilo The Hedonist Extrait de Parfum: What It Smells Like and What Changed From the Original

Parfum Central

Ex Nihilo The Hedonist Extrait de Parfum is the richer, fruitier version of The Hedonist, the house's woody fragrance of black stone and wild landscapes. Ex Nihilo kept the original's ginger, cedarwood and vetiver, then had perfumer Jordi Fernández add lychee, grapefruit, patchouli and what the house calls "an overdose of textured woods". Interest is climbing fast: Google Keyword Planner shows about 2,500 US searches a month for "ex nihilo hedonist extrait", up roughly 70% on the previous three months. The two questions behind those searches are simple. What does it smell like, and how is it different from the original? This guide answers both, using Ex Nihilo's own descriptions.

What Ex Nihilo The Hedonist Extrait de Parfum is

The Hedonist Extrait de Parfum is an Extrait in Ex Nihilo's Quintessence collection, which the house says "expresses the most radical version of EX NIHILO's iconic fragrances as Extraits de Parfum." Ex Nihilo describes the Extrait as a reinvention "through a quintessential version," adding that it "exalts the strong character of the original THE HEDONIST."

Both versions share a tagline, "Destination unknown," and a perfumer. Jordi Fernández created the original The Hedonist and reworked it for the Extrait. He is also the perfumer behind Gold Immortals, another Ex Nihilo fragrance that has its own Quintessence Extrait.

An Extrait de Parfum is the most concentrated tier most perfume houses make, above Eau de Parfum and Eau de Toilette. Our guide to EDP vs EDT vs Parfum explains how the tiers differ. Ex Nihilo uses that format for the whole Quintessence line.

Ex Nihilo itself is a French fragrance house founded in 2013 by Sylvie Loday, Olivier Royère and Benoît Verdier. Its Latin name means "created out of the blue". For more on the house, read our guide to whether Ex Nihilo is a luxury brand.

What does The Hedonist Extrait smell like?

It opens fresh and juicy, then turns into a deep, woody base. In Ex Nihilo's words, the perfumer "added addictive and fruity notes of Lychee and Grapefruit," then "boosted the base notes with an addictive Patchouli and adorned it with an overdose of textured woods to create the most captivating sillage."

Stage Notes Ex Nihilo lists What they bring
Top Grapefruit, bergamot, ginger A sharp citrus lift with a little heat from the ginger
Heart Akigalawood, cedarwood, lychee Juicy, slightly floral fruit over dry, pencil-shaving wood
Base Ambery woods, vetiver, tonka bean, patchouli Warm, earthy and dark, with a soft sweetness from the tonka

Lychee is the surprise here. In perfume it reads as juicy and slightly floral, and Ex Nihilo puts it in the heart right next to the woods, so the fruit never floats on its own.

Akigalawood is a trademarked woody material (Ex Nihilo writes it as Akigalawood™). It appears in both versions of The Hedonist and also in the base of Ex Nihilo Scarlet Sands.

Patchouli is an earthy, slightly sweet leaf oil. Ex Nihilo calls the Extrait's patchouli "addictive" and added it to the base, where the original had none.

The Hedonist vs The Hedonist Extrait: what changed

The Extrait keeps the original's skeleton and adds fruit and depth. Ex Nihilo's two note lists, side by side:

The Hedonist Eau de Parfum The Hedonist Extrait de Parfum
Top Bergamot, ginger Grapefruit, bergamot, ginger
Heart Cedarwood, Akigalawood Akigalawood, cedarwood, lychee
Base Vetiver, musks, tonka bean Ambery woods, vetiver, tonka bean, patchouli
Story "Wild, untamed nature," "black stones and extreme temperatures" "A quintessential version" that "exalts the strong character of the original"

Four things are new: grapefruit, lychee, ambery woods and patchouli. One thing is gone from the list: the musks the original uses to soften its base. Ex Nihilo describes the original as a blend where "a zesty burst of Ginger and Bergamot ignites fresh energy" while "rich Cedarwood and Haitian Vetiver ground the scent with strength." The new version keeps that ginger and vetiver and builds a warmer, more textured base on top of them.

So if you already wear The Hedonist, the Extrait is the darker, fruitier version of a scent you know. If you are new to both, it is the richer one, and the one Parfum Central carries.

Is The Hedonist Extrait worth it over the Eau de Parfum?

It depends on what you liked in the original. Choose the Extrait if you want more fruit and more depth: the lychee and grapefruit make the opening juicier, and the patchouli and ambery woods give the base more weight than the musky original. Ex Nihilo itself describes the result as "the most captivating sillage." Stay with the Eau de Parfum if what you love is its cleaner, ginger and vetiver freshness, because the musks that soften it are not in the Extrait's list.

Is The Hedonist Extrait unisex?

Yes. Ex Nihilo does not market it to men or women, and we list it as unisex. The citrus and lychee keep it bright, and the woods and patchouli keep it grounded, so it sits easily on anyone who likes a woody fragrance with some fruit in it.

Who The Hedonist Extrait suits

It suits people who want a woody fragrance with a bright edge rather than a smoky or heavy one. It works well if you:

  1. Like vetiver and cedarwood but find most woody fragrances too dry.
  2. Want something fruity that never turns sweet or sugary.
  3. Already wear the original The Hedonist and want more depth.
  4. Want one bottle that works as a signature scent from spring to late autumn.

Our editorial view, not the house's: it shines on cooler evenings, and two or three sprays are enough, as with most Extraits.

The Quintessence collection and Gold Immortals Extrait

The Quintessence collection is Ex Nihilo's line of Extraits de Parfum. Its page lists six fragrances: Blue Talisman Extrait, Fleur Narcotique, Gold Immortals, Lust in Paradise Extrait, Outcast Blue and The Hedonist.

Its closest relative on our shelves is Ex Nihilo Gold Immortals Extrait. Ex Nihilo says the same perfumer "reinvents his iconic creation GOLD IMMORTALS through a quintessential essence." Where The Hedonist goes woody, Gold Immortals goes floral and ambery, with pear and bergamot, ylang-ylang, and a base of tonka bean and vanilla.

Frequently asked questions

What does Ex Nihilo The Hedonist Extrait smell like?

Ex Nihilo lists grapefruit, bergamot and ginger on top, Akigalawood, cedarwood and lychee in the heart, and ambery woods, vetiver, tonka bean and patchouli in the base. It opens bright and juicy, then settles into dark, textured woods.

What is the difference between The Hedonist and The Hedonist Extrait?

The Extrait adds grapefruit, lychee, ambery woods and patchouli, and drops the musks from the original's base. Ex Nihilo says the Extrait "exalts the strong character of the original THE HEDONIST."

Who created The Hedonist Extrait?

Perfumer Jordi Fernández, who also created the original The Hedonist and Gold Immortals for Ex Nihilo.

Is The Hedonist Extrait for men or women?

Both. Ex Nihilo does not market it to either, and Parfum Central lists it as unisex.

What collection is The Hedonist Extrait in?

It belongs to Quintessence, the Ex Nihilo collection that presents the house's iconic fragrances as Extraits de Parfum.

Which is better, Extrait or Eau de Parfum?

Neither is better in itself. An Extrait de Parfum is more concentrated, and with The Hedonist the two versions also smell different: the Extrait adds lychee, grapefruit, patchouli and ambery woods, while the Eau de Parfum is fresher and muskier.

Is an Extrait the same as a Parfum?

They are the same top tier of concentration, and houses use either name. Ex Nihilo calls its versions Extraits de Parfum, and our guide to perfume concentrations explains the tiers.

What sizes does The Hedonist Extrait come in?

Ex Nihilo sells it in 50 ml and 100 ml. Parfum Central carries the 100 ml bottle.

Where can I buy The Hedonist Extrait in the UAE?

Parfum Central carries the 100 ml Extrait de Parfum at AED 2,450, shipped from Dubai with DHL Express: 30 AED within the UAE and 88 AED to 130+ other countries, with delivery in 3 to 5 business days.

The short answer

Ex Nihilo The Hedonist Extrait de Parfum is Jordi Fernández's richer take on The Hedonist: the same ginger, cedarwood, Akigalawood and vetiver, with lychee and grapefruit on top and patchouli and ambery woods underneath. It is unisex, bright at first and deeply woody later, and it belongs to Ex Nihilo's Quintessence line of Extraits. If a fruity woody fragrance with real depth is what you want, you can find the 100 ml Ex Nihilo The Hedonist Extrait de Parfum at Parfum Central.
