Penhaligon's Halfeti Explained: Original, Leather, Cedar and Amber
The town that gave the perfume its name
On the banks of the Euphrates in southeastern Turkey sits Halfeti, a town that is now partly underwater. When the Birecik Dam was completed in 2000 the reservoir swallowed roughly 40 percent of it, along with two neighbouring towns and ten villages. What survives above the waterline is a strip of old stone houses, a mosque with only its minaret showing, and the gardens that made the place famous.
Those gardens grow a rose so deeply pigmented that in high summer it reads almost black. It is not literally black. Turkish horticulturists have said as much, and the flower is better described as a very dark crimson that the local soil and the river's chemistry push toward the edge of black. Rarity does the rest: the conditions that produce it exist in a handful of gardens and nowhere else.
Penhaligon's released Halfeti in 2015 as part of its Trade Routes collection, the series built around goods that moved between Britain and the East. Perfumer Christian Provenzano built it around rose, spice, leather and oud, the shipping manifest of a Levant trading house turned into a fragrance.
What Halfeti actually smells like
The original opens sharp and green. Grapefruit and bergamot sit against cypress leaf and artemisia, with saffron and cardamom arriving almost immediately, so the citrus never gets a clean run. The heart is Bulgarian rose with nutmeg and jasmine. The base is where it settles into what most people remember: agarwood, cedar, leather, sandalwood, amber, tonka and vanilla.
Two things make it distinctive. The rose is fruity and lit rather than powdery or soapy, which is what separates it from most Western rose fragrances. And the leather is soft, closer to suede than to a tannery. That combination of bright rose over dark, smooth base is the Halfeti signature, and it is what every flanker keeps or deliberately breaks.
How the four Halfeti fragrances differ
Halfeti (2015)
The reference point. Rose forward, oud and leather beneath, spice throughout. Eau de parfum. If someone says Halfeti without qualification, this is the one they mean.
Halfeti Leather (2020)
Provenzano again. The rose stays but steps back, and leather moves to the front, joined by incense and patchouli. Plum and cardamom open it, cumin and cinnamon warm the heart. Darker and drier than the original, and the one most often described as the masculine reading of the line, though it wears unisex in practice.
Halfeti Cedar (2020)
The outlier. Cedar drops the rose emphasis almost entirely and goes into dry wood and resin. Rum, saffron and peach open it; Virginia cedar, dried fruit and immortelle sit in the middle; Atlas cedar, tonka, vanilla and labdanum close it. Choose this one if you like the Halfeti base but not rose.
Halfeti Amber (2026)
The newest, and the most stripped back. Three notes: saffron, suede, amber. No rose at all. It takes the warm end of the original DNA and concentrates it, which makes it denser and closer to the skin than the 2015 version rather than louder. Released as a limited edition sold through the Penhaligon's boutique at the Dubai Mall.

Which one should you choose
If you want the fragrance people mean when they say Halfeti, that is the 2015 original, and rose needs to be something you enjoy.
If rose is the part you would rather avoid, the choice is between Cedar and Amber. Cedar goes dry and woody. Amber goes warm and resinous, and it is the closer-wearing of the two.
If you want the darkest version, Halfeti Leather is it.
