The Spirit of Dubai: The House Behind the Crystal Bottles

Parfum Central

What The Spirit of Dubai actually is

The Spirit of Dubai presents like a boutique operation. Heavy bottles, crystal, lacquer, prices that start where most niche houses stop. The natural assumption is a small independent house, or a vanity project with a city's name on it.

It is neither. It is the luxury arm of Nabeel Perfumes, a family fragrance group whose roots go back to 1969 and which operates out of the Sharjah Airport International Free Zone, on a site the company puts at more than 200,000 square feet. Nabeel runs several brands across very different price points. The Spirit of Dubai is the top of that structure, launched in January 2015.

We stock this house at Parfum Central, which is why we went and checked who is behind it rather than repeating the brand's own copy.

A house with its own plant behind it is a different proposition from a label that briefs everything out, and it is part of why this line has kept going while a lot of luxury-Dubai branding has not.

The packaging award, and why it is the useful fact

Plenty of brands claim craft. This one has an outside verdict. At the 2015 Luxury Packaging Awards in London the house took two categories, one for its bags and one for perfume packaging, in a field that included Chloe, Lalique and Kenzo. The judging panel was drawn from Procter and Gamble, Marks and Spencer and Harrods.

That is worth more than any marketing line, because packaging awards are judged by people who handle luxury packaging for a living and have no stake in Arabian perfumery. The finishes are the thing being judged: piano black lacquer, Swarovski crystal, presentation cases built to be kept.

It also tells you what you are paying for. A meaningful share of the price of any bottle in this line is the object, not the liquid. Whether that is worth it is your call, but it should be a conscious one.

First Generation and Second Generation

The house launched in January 2015 with what it calls the First Generation, its luxury collection. The Second Generation followed, positioned as ultra-luxury.

Bahar belongs to that first group. It was one of the five bottles in the case that won the perfume packaging category in 2015, alongside Rimal, Abraj, Oud and Meydan.

The split is about materials and presentation rather than two separate creative directions, so do not read the Second Generation as a replacement for the First. They run alongside each other.

Why The Spirit of Dubai range feels scattered

If you sample across this house, the fragrances can seem to have nothing to do with each other. That is deliberate. The house takes the city itself as its brief and works through its parts separately: the coastline, the desert, Arabian hospitality, equestrian culture, and the modern city.

So a marine composition and a heavy oud sit in the same line without contradiction, because they are answering different prompts. It does mean there is no house signature to learn. You judge each bottle on its own.

The two Spirit of Dubai fragrances we have carried

We are not going to pretend to a full range here. Parfum Central has carried two of them, and one is currently out of stock. Both are listed below, honestly, because a guide that hides what it cannot sell is not a guide.

The Spirit of Dubai Fakhama EDP

The Spirit of Dubai Fakhama EDP on dark walnut console with a small brass incense bowl, smoke curling upward
The oud and rose reading. In autumn and winter.

Fakhama is a blend of oud, rose and amber. It opens on fruit and florals and settles into woods and musks, with spice running through the middle.

It is a formal evening fragrance, and it suits autumn and winter. Sillage is strong enough that a light hand is the right approach.

Released: 2016
Notes: Top: Saffron, Bergamot, Apple / Middle: Rose, Leather, Oud, Amber / Base: Patchouli, Musk, Sandalwood, Vanilla
Size and price: 50ml, AED 1,550
Availability: in stock

The Spirit of Dubai Bahar

The marine amber reading. In spring and summer.

Bahar is a marine amber fragrance. Sea breeze, amber and woods, built around Dubai's coast rather than its desert.

Sea salt, citrus and airy musks sit over soft woods. It reads lighter than Fakhama and holds together in heat, which is what it was made for.

Released: 2015
Notes: Top: Bergamot, Sea Notes, Saffron / Middle: Rose, Jasmine, Cedarwood, Patchouli / Base: Ambergris, Musk, Vanilla, Oud
Size and price: 50ml, AED 1,310
Availability: currently out of stock. Listed here for comparison, not for sale.

Which of the two

They are opposites, which makes the choice unusually simple.

Fragrance Character Released Season Price Stock
Fakhama Oud, rose, leather, amber 2016 Autumn and winter AED 1,550 In stock
Bahar Sea notes, ambergris, rose 2015 Spring and summer AED 1,310 Out of stock

Fakhama is the cold-weather one. Oud, rose, leather and amber, formal, and heavy enough that it wants an evening and a reason. If you already wear oud and want the house's serious face, this is it.

Bahar is the warm-weather one. Sea notes and ambergris over rose and cedarwood, lighter and more open, built for heat rather than for ceremony. It is out of stock with us at the moment, so it is here as context rather than as an option.

For how any of this behaves in Gulf heat, our guide to how to wear oud perfume correctly is the practical companion, and EDP vs EDT vs parfum explains why concentration changes how long a fragrance lasts.

Is it worth the money

At AED 1,550 for 50ml, Fakhama is priced against serious niche competition, and a real share of that is the bottle: the crystal-set band, the lacquered cap, the case. If you want the most fragrance per dirham, this is not the efficient way to buy it, and we would rather say so than pretend otherwise.

What you are buying instead is a specific thing done well. The oud is real and the presentation is award-winning, and for a gift or a formal wardrobe piece that combination is exactly the point. Buy it for the object as much as the liquid, and it makes sense. Buy it purely on performance per millilitre and it will not.

Frequently asked questions

Who owns The Spirit of Dubai?

Nabeel Perfumes, a family fragrance group whose roots go back to 1969 and which is now based in the UAE. The Spirit of Dubai is its luxury niche line, launched in January 2015. Nabeel runs several brands from the Sharjah Airport International Free Zone, on a site the company puts at more than 200,000 square feet.

Is The Spirit of Dubai a real niche brand or a tourist souvenir?

It is a real house with real output. The clearest outside evidence is the 2015 Luxury Packaging Awards in London, where it won two categories, for its bags and for perfume packaging, against a field including Chloe, Lalique and Kenzo. Whether the juice justifies the price is a separate question and a matter of taste, but the operation is not a gift shop line.

What is the difference between the First and Second Generation?

The house launched in January 2015 with what it calls the First Generation, its luxury collection, and followed it with the Second Generation, positioned as ultra-luxury. The split is about materials and presentation rather than two different creative directions.

What does Fakhama smell like?

Oud, rose and amber, worn formally. Saffron, bergamot and apple open it, the heart is rose with leather, oud and amber, and it settles on patchouli, musk, sandalwood and vanilla. It is a cool-weather, evening fragrance rather than a daytime one.

What does Bahar smell like?

Marine and amber rather than oud-forward. Bergamot, sea notes and saffron open it, rose, jasmine, cedarwood and patchouli sit in the heart, and ambergris, musk, vanilla and oud close it. It is the summer one of the two. It is currently out of stock with us.

Why are the bottles so elaborate?

Presentation is the point of the line. The house uses finishes like piano black lacquer and Swarovski crystal on its sets, and the packaging is designed to be kept rather than discarded. That is what the 2015 awards recognised.
