Rose and Oud Perfume: Why the Pairing Works, and What Taif Rose Costs
Share
Why rose and oud belong together
A rose oud perfume is any composition built on the two materials together, and the pairing is old enough that most houses have attempted it at least once. Five of them are compared further down.
Rose is bright, faintly green and sweet. Oud is dark, resinous and animalic, and on its own it can sit heavily on the skin. Put them together and each one covers what the other lacks. The rose keeps the oud from closing in, and the oud gives the rose a floor to stand on instead of evaporating into soap.
This is not a recent idea. Rose and oud have been blended in Arabian perfumery for centuries, long before European houses started building around the pairing. What changed is the materials available and the concentrations used, which is why two rose-oud fragrances can smell almost unrelated.
What makes Taif rose different
Most rose in perfumery is Rosa damascena, grown in Bulgaria, Turkey, Morocco or France. Taif rose is the same species grown somewhere unusually hostile: the mountain terraces around Taif in Saudi Arabia, at roughly 1,500 to 2,000 metres.
The growing conditions do the work
Hot days, cold nights and very little rain stress the plants. A stressed rose puts more of itself into its oil, and the result is a profile noticeably different from the same species grown in a gentler climate: deeper, spicier, with less of the clean greenness of a Bulgarian rose.
The harvest is brief
Picking runs for roughly 30 to 40 days a year, usually April into May. Petals come off before dawn, because the oil concentration falls once the sun is on them. Everything is done by hand.
The yield is the reason for the price
Reported figures put the yield at somewhere around 4 to 5 tonnes of petals for one kilogram of oil, distilled in copper stills over several hours. Trade prices reported for Taif rose oil run to around 30,000 US dollars per kilogram. That is why it tends to appear as an accent inside a formula rather than as the bulk of one, and why a bottle built around it costs what it does.
Five rose and oud fragrances we carry at Parfum Central
One thing worth being precise about, because it is often blurred: only one of these actually contains Taif rose. The others use Turkish rose, Rose de Mai, or list rose without naming the type. Each entry below says which.
1. Roja Taif Aoud Parfum

Roja Dove used an aldehyde opening in Taif Aoud, a deliberate classicism: aldehydes lift the bergamot top with a soapy, luminous effervescence referencing the golden era of French perfumery. The contrast with what follows is intentional.
Cassis and jasmine amplify the floral richness; geranium adds green structure; clove and ylang-ylang bring spiced warmth. Agarwood in the base forms the second anchor: smoky, resinous, with a leathery quality that pairs naturally with rose.
Rose used: Taif rose
Notes: Top: Aldehydes, Bergamot / Middle: Taif Rose, Cassis, Jasmine, Geranium, Clove, Ylang-Ylang / Base: Agarwood (Oud), Benzoin, Musk, Patchouli, Incense, Labdanum, Vanilla
Size and price: 100ml, AED 2,900

2. Roja United Arab Emirates Parfum

Roja United Arab Emirates is a rose and oud composition built on a large scale. A short lift of bergamot and artemisia gives way to a dense floral heart, where a Taif style rose sits with jasmine, geranium and ylang ylang, sharpened by clove and a hint of cassis.
The base is where it deepens. Oud carries an animalic depth alongside guaiac wood and patchouli, while frankincense and benzoin add resinous smoke over oakmoss and musk.
Rose used: Rose de Mai, described as Taif style
Notes: Top: Bergamot, Artemisia / Middle: Rose de Mai, Jasmine, Geranium, Ylang Ylang, Clove, Cassis / Base: Agarwood (Oud), Guaiac Wood, Patchouli, Oakmoss, Frankincense, Benzoin, Musk
Size and price: 50ml, AED 2,100

3. Nishane Mana Extrait de Parfum

Mana opens hot. Saffron, ginger, cardamom and black pepper arrive together and the effect is genuinely spicy rather than decorative, a sharp start that signals the weight coming behind it.
Oud and Turkish rose form the heart, joined by castoreum and suede, and here the composition turns animalic. The leather is not clean or modern; it carries a raw quality that some will find confronting.
Rose used: Turkish rose
Notes: Top: Saffron, Ginger, Cardamom, Black Pepper / Middle: Oud, Turkish Rose, Castoreum, Suede / Base: Labdanum, Patchouli, Sandalwood, Guaiac Wood, Benzoin, Olibanum, Musk
Size and price: 50ml, AED 1,950

4. Maison Crivelli Oud Maracuja

Oud Maracuja is Maison Crivelli's study in contrast: passion fruit (maracuja) brings bright tropical acidity against oud's dark, woody-resinous depth.
Turkish rose in the heart provides warm, rich floral depth; leather introduces animalic dryness. Incense adds smoky-resinous character; oud provides woody-resinous depth; akigalawood (a Givaudan patented material combining woody and patchouli-like qualities) adds modern earthy depth.
Rose used: Turkish rose
Notes: Top: Passion Fruit, Saffron / Middle: Turkish Rose, Leather, Incense / Base: Oud, Akigalawood, Amber

How to choose between them
If the rose is the point, Roja Taif Aoud is the one built around it, and the aldehyde opening makes the first hour unlike the others here.
If you want the oud to lead, Nishane Mana is the most animalic of the five and the least polite. Maison Crivelli Oud Maracuja goes the other way, using passion fruit to lift the opening before the oud arrives.
Boadicea Tobacco Sapphire brings tobacco into the structure, which reads drier and smokier than the rest. Roja United Arab Emirates is the most ceremonial, and the closest in spirit to a traditional Gulf rose-oud.
For application in Gulf heat, our guide to how to wear oud perfume correctly is the practical companion to this one, and what is oud perfume covers the material itself.
Frequently asked questions
Why do rose and oud go together?
Rose is bright, sweet and slightly green. Oud is dark, resinous and animalic. Each one supplies what the other lacks, so the rose keeps the oud from turning heavy and the oud gives the rose somewhere to sit. The pairing is centuries old in Arabian perfumery and most Western houses arrived at it much later.
What is Taif rose?
Rosa damascena grown in the mountains around Taif in Saudi Arabia, at roughly 1,500 to 2,000 metres. It is the same species as the Damask rose grown in Bulgaria and Turkey, but the altitude, the heat by day, the cold at night and the low rainfall stress the plants and concentrate the oil into a different profile.
Why is Taif rose so expensive?
Three reasons compound. The harvest runs only about 30 to 40 days a year, petals are picked before dawn when the oil is at its peak, and the yield is tiny: reported figures put it at roughly 4 to 5 tonnes of petals for a single kilogram of oil. Trade prices reported for Taif rose oil run to around 30,000 US dollars per kilogram, which is why it usually appears as an accent rather than the bulk of a formula.
Which of these actually contains Taif rose?
Only Roja Taif Aoud lists Taif rose in its composition. Roja United Arab Emirates uses Rose de Mai and is described as Taif style. Nishane Mana and Maison Crivelli Oud Maracuja use Turkish rose. Boadicea Tobacco Sapphire lists rose without specifying the type.
Is rose and oud unisex?
In the Gulf it has always been worn by everyone. Western marketing tends to code rose as feminine and oud as masculine, which is why the same combination gets sold differently in different markets. Four of the five rose and oud fragrances covered in this guide are listed as unisex. Boadicea Tobacco Sapphire is listed as a men's fragrance, though nothing in the composition limits who wears it.
How should I wear rose and oud in hot weather?
Sparingly, and preferably in the evening. These are dense compositions and heat amplifies them, so one or two sprays on clothing or at the pulse points is usually enough. Our guide to how to wear oud perfume correctly covers this in more detail.
