Carnation (Dianthus caryophyllus) is the spice-floral that built classical perfumery in the 1920s and 30s, with Caron Bellodgia (1927) and Roger and Gallet Oeillet Bleu (1893) as the genre references. The flower itself yields almost no usable oil, so the carnation accord is reconstructed from clove eugenol, ylang-ylang, rose absolute, and supporting peppery-floral molecules. The result smells warm, slightly spicy, and unmistakably retro, with a powdered-clove signature that reads warmer and drier than pure rose. Carnation appears in modern niche releases including Vero Profumo Onda, Roja Parfums Diaghilev, and several Frederic Malle compositions that lean into classical structure. It pairs especially well with rose, clove, sandalwood, and oakmoss for chypre-floral foundations. Browse carnation-led fragrances at the carnation collection.
