Memo Paris Perfumes Explained: Irish Leather, Iberian Leather, Jannat, Cappadocia, Madurai and More

Parfum Central

Memo Paris makes perfume from places. Irish Leather, Madurai, Marfa, Abu Dhabi, Cappadocia: every name on the shelf is a destination, and every bottle carries an artist's drawing of it. This guide explains the house, walks through the ten Memo Paris perfumes we carry, including Iberian Leather, Jannat and Cappadocia, three the brand sells through its US store only, and helps you choose. All ten ship from Parfum Central in Dubai.

Who is Memo Paris?

Memo Paris is a Paris perfume house founded in 2007 by Clara Molloy and her husband John. The brand describes the couple as "a Parisian poet of Catalan origin" and "an Irish globe-trotter and sportsman", and says the house "conceives its creations as Travel Notes - memories of destinations with a singular power of attraction, transformed into fragrances built on intense and precious raw materials."

The name comes from the same idea. In the house's words, "Memo like memory. Like souvenir. Like sillage." Its motto is "The Journey is the destination."

The first destination was Lalibela in Ethiopia, a rose and myrrh perfume by Aliénor Massenet, "the beginning of a collaboration that still endures today." Since then, the brand says, "some fifty fragrances have been created." Every one is an Eau de Parfum: Memo Paris "has chosen to exclusively offer Eau de Parfum", and all its perfumes are made in France.

A Memo Paris bottle carries a motif drawn by an artist for that destination, and the bottle colours run from light to dark, which the house describes as "a visual gradient from light to dark, symbolising the intensity of the fragrances much as a day unfolds."

The three Memo Paris collections

Memo Paris sorts its perfumes into families. The ten we carry come from three of them:

Collection The idea, in the brand's words Memo Paris we carry
Cuirs Nomades "An ode to travel and freedom" Irish, African, French, Indian and Iberian Leather
Fleurs Bohèmes "Flowers express a free-spirited beauty" Madurai, Marfa
Graines Vagabondes "A celebration of vitality and movement" Abu Dhabi, Cappadocia, Jannat

The leather line is the house signature. "Is leather not, in essence, nomadic?" the brand asks. "Memo Paris has created a collection of fragrances in which the leather accord is embraced differently, depending on the landscapes encountered."

Memo Paris Irish Leather

Memo Paris Irish Leather is, in the brand's words, "a nod to the Irish origins of Memo Paris' co-founder." It "blends green Leather with the windy freshness of Juniper Berries essence and Iris concrete."

The brand lists pepper, mandarin and juniper berry at the top, iris concrete, clary sage and green maté at the heart, and green leather, cedarwood and vetiver in the base. It is fresh and green for a leather, the one to try if you think leather perfumes are too heavy. Memo Paris counts it among its Iconics. 75 ml, AED 950.

Memo Paris African Leather

Memo Paris African Leather is the warm, spiced side of the collection, by Aliénor Massenet. The house describes "warm spicy notes of cardamom and saffron over a floral touch of geranium, which mingle with a leather accord to give life to an exceptional wild leather."

Its pyramid runs from cardamom, geranium and pink pepper through rose, patchouli and cinnamon to a leather accord, oud and amber. Another Iconic, and the choice for spice lovers. 75 ml, AED 975.

Memo Paris French Leather

Memo Paris French Leather is the softest of the leathers, also by Aliénor Massenet. Lime and rose sit over a suede accord that, in the brand's words, evokes "the inside of a handbag", and the house says it "awakens the Parisian spirit in everyone."

The notes are juniper berry, lime, bergamot and pink pepper, then rose, clary sage and hay, then Virginia cedar and suede. A rose leather for daytime. 75 ml, AED 1,075.

Memo Paris Indian Leather

Memo Paris Indian Leather is the darkest, by Juliette Karagueuzoglou. The brand chose "an opulent, imposing oud with controlled excess", which "leads to a flamboyant, powerful leather accord with chiseled contours." Its bottle pays tribute to the elephant.

Cypriol opens it, rose and jasmine form the heart, and vanilla, patchouli, styrax, oud, olibanum and leather make up the base. If you want oud and leather together, it is also one of the picks in our oud perfume list. 75 ml, AED 975.

Memo Paris Iberian Leather

Memo Paris Iberian Leather is the brand's "dense and smoky leathery fragrance." Its bottle carries a lion "inspired by the rampant one in the Spanish coat of arms", and the house calls it "the leather of the leathers."

Saffron, rosemary and cinnamon open it, iris, coriander and carrot seed sit at the heart, and a leather accord, Atlas cedar and agarwood finish it. Memo Paris sells Iberian Leather through its US store only, so it is one of the harder Memo perfumes to find in the Gulf. 75 ml, AED 1,100.

The Memo Paris florals: Fleurs Bohèmes

Memo Paris Madurai

Memo Paris Madurai is "a memory of India, steeped in the rich and airy fragrance of jasmine sambac and the creamier scent of sandalwood." Its perfumer, Gaël Montero, who the brand says works in Dubai, recalls: "I created Madurai thinking about a wonderful trip to South India."

The brand lists lemon, bergamot, turmeric, clary sage and peach at the top, jasmine sambac, tuberose and jasmine at the heart, and sandalwood and suede in the base. The bottle's motif is drawn from the ceiling of the temple. A bright white floral, and one of the Iconics. 75 ml, AED 950.

Memo Paris Marfa

Memo Paris Marfa takes its name from the Texas desert town, and its bottle is "emblazoned with a wide-open eye." At its centre is tuberose, which the brand calls "a bewitching, lingering, unforgettable flower."

Mandarin and peach open it, ylang-ylang, tuberose and orange blossom follow, and Virginia cedar, vanilla, tonka, sandalwood and musk settle underneath. Richer and creamier than Madurai, and a third Aliénor Massenet creation. 75 ml, AED 1,100.

Graines Vagabondes: Abu Dhabi, Cappadocia and Jannat

Memo Paris Abu Dhabi

Memo Paris Abu Dhabi is the house's Gulf perfume, by Mylène Alran. "The Abu Dhabi fragrance has a guest of honor: the date," the brand writes, "emblematic of the Al Aïn Oasis", with "plum, amber, vetiver, saffron and cardamom." Its bottle is "inspired by Al-Sadu patterns, a traditional Bedouin technique of weaving."

Bergamot, orange, pink pepper, cardamom, ginger and olibanum open it; date, plum, davana and orange blossom make the heart; three vetivers, patchouli, cistus, fir balsam and ambery notes form the base. Sweet, warm and resinous. 75 ml, AED 975.

Memo Paris Cappadocia

Memo Paris Cappadocia is built on saffron. "Saffron is the keystone of this composition," the brand says, and its bottle shows Cappadocia's "fairy chimneys." Gaël Montero describes a perfume "born from the idea of a creamy saffron."

Saffron leads into jasmine, iris butter and rose, over sandalwood, olibanum, myrrh, benzoin and vanilla. Like Iberian Leather, Memo Paris sells it through its US store only. 75 ml, AED 950.

Memo Paris Jannat

Memo Paris Jannat is the lightest of the ten, by Aliénor Massenet. "Jannat means "paradise" in Urdu, a language spoken in India and Pakistan," the brand explains.

Grapefruit, ginger, pink pepper and lemon open it, orange blossom, neroli, rose and lychee form the heart, and amber, cedarwood and musk finish it. Fresh, bright and easy to wear in the heat. It is the third of our Memo perfumes sold by the brand through its US store only. 75 ml, AED 750.
