Cumin smells warm, sweaty and animalic, with a woody, earthy edge and a distinctly human skin-like quality. It is one of perfumery's most polarising notes and a secret weapon in many classic compositions.
The oil is steam-distilled from the dried seeds of Cuminum cyminum, an umbelliferous plant native to the eastern Mediterranean and cultivated mainly in India, Iran, Syria and Turkey. The key aroma molecule is cuminaldehyde, which gives cumin its characteristic earthy-sweat profile. Used at trace levels it reads warm and sensual; at higher doses it becomes controversial and unmistakable.
Cumin is a heart note and a bold ingredient. Perfumers use it to add body heat to oriental compositions (Femme, Kouros, Declaration), to give animalic warmth to rose and jasmine, and to bring spice-bazaar realism to leather and oud. It pairs naturally with coriander, saffron, rose and oud.
Cumin performs best in cooler weather and evening wear, where its warmth blooms on skin. Wear with confidence.
