Davana is an artemisia relative with a warm, dried-fruit character rarely used in mainstream perfumery: Amouage's Outlands EDP builds it into a 13-note spiced floral heart above a base of oud, opoponax, and labdanum, for men.
Outlands EDP, released in 2024, opens on cardamom, bergamot, lemon, and Sichuan pepper. Sichuan pepper has a numbing, slightly electric quality distinct from black pepper, adding unusual texture to the citrus-spice opening. Elemi in the early heart bridges to the resinous materials that follow: frankincense, rose, orange blossom, geranium, cumin, davana, saffron, anise, and coriander form a layered mid-section where a collective warmth builds without a single note dominating.
Davana's dried-fruit character adds warm sweetness to the spice mix; cumin creates an earthy, slightly sharp edge; coriander and anise provide herbal-culinary depth. The base layers benzoin, labdanum, amber, ambergris, frankincense, opoponax (sweet myrrh), vanilla, birch, musk, and oud into a dense, long-lasting resinous foundation. Ten to twelve hours on skin.
Outlands EDP suits autumn and winter from early evening onward. The complexity of the heart is most legible in cool air. A fragrance suited to formal evening occasions.
