Heliotrope Perfumes & Fragrances

Heliotrope fragrance note icon

Heliotrope smells sweet, almondy and powdery, like cherry pie, marzipan and a dusting of talcum powder. It is one of the classic comfort notes of perfumery, with a distinctly vintage feel.

The flower Heliotropium arborescens, nicknamed cherry pie, yields no usable essential oil. The note is built entirely from synthetic molecules, principally heliotropin (also known as piperonal), isolated in 1869 and still the backbone of the accord. Perfumers support it with vanillin, almond molecules, iso-eugenol and soft floral materials to reproduce the flower's characteristic powder-cherry quality.

Heliotrope is a heart note with powdery reach into the base. Perfumers use it in classic powdery florals (L'Heure Bleue, Apres l'Ondee, Loulou), to soften gourmand vanilla compositions, and to add a retro pastry warmth to modern orientals. It pairs beautifully with iris, violet, almond, tonka and rose.

Heliotrope performs best in autumn, winter and evening wear, and suits feminine and unisex signatures with a vintage or powder-soft character.
