Madagascar produces over 80% of the world's vanilla, with Vanilla planifolia beans cured for six to eight months to develop their full aromatic profile. The result is a rich, sweet, slightly woody vanilla with custard, milk, and tonka facets, considered the gold standard in modern perfumery. Madagascar vanilla anchors the sweet base of Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille, Maison Francis Kurkdjian Baccarat Rouge 540, and the Yves Saint Laurent Libre line. It pairs particularly well with tonka, benzoin, sandalwood, and labdanum to build amber accords, and with coffee or tobacco for gourmand-leaning compositions. The natural absolute is roughly twenty times more expensive than synthetic vanillin, which is why most mainstream vanilla fragrances use a hybrid.
