Mandarin Orange Perfumes & Fragrances

The oil is cold-pressed from the rind of Citrus reticulata, grown mainly in Sicily, Calabria, Spain and Brazil. Three varieties dominate: green mandarin (unripe, sharp and zesty), yellow mandarin (balanced) and red mandarin (ripest, warmest and most floral). Tangerine is a closely related cultivar. The signature molecule is methyl N-methylanthranilate, which gives mandarin its characteristic grape-like softness and faint almond-floral character.

Mandarin orange is a top note. Perfumers use it to open compositions where bergamot or lemon would feel too sharp, to add juicy lift to florals, and to soften gourmand and vanilla bases. It pairs beautifully with neroli, rose, iris and clean musks.
