Sichuan Pepper Perfumes & Fragrances

Sichuan Pepper fragrance note icon

Sichuan pepper smells tingling, bright and citrus-spicy, with a grapefruit top and a faint anise-like buzz. It is not related to black pepper at all and gives fragrance a distinctly modern, electric character.

The raw material comes from the dried husks of Zanthoxylum bungeanum and Zanthoxylum piperitum, small thorny trees native to China, Japan and the Himalayas. Unlike Piper nigrum, Sichuan pepper's characteristic tongue-numbing effect comes from hydroxy-alpha-sanshool, a molecule that is not volatile and does not survive into perfumery. The aromatic oil is steam-distilled from the husks and is dominated by linalool and limonene, giving the zesty, floral-citrus profile.

Sichuan pepper is a top note and a modern favourite. Perfumers use it to lift floral compositions, to add sparkle to masculine fougeres, and to bring a fizzy, Asian-market spice to woody and leather bases. It pairs beautifully with rose, grapefruit, vetiver and iso e super.

Sichuan pepper performs best in spring, autumn and transitional weather, and suits modern unisex signatures.
