Michel Roth composed Noir Epices in 2000 as one of the founding releases in Frédéric Malle's Editions de Parfums label. The opening of geranium and orange is briefly fresh, carrying none of the intensity about to follow. Rose in the top adds floral warmth that connects the fresh opening to the concentrated spice heart.
Cloves, nutmeg, pepper, and cinnamon form a dense, dry spice accord in the heart: complex and warm without tipping toward sweetness. Patchouli in the base provides earthy grounding; sandalwood and cedar add woody structure. Vanilla appears in the drydown as a restrained sweetener that rounds rather than dominates the spice register. Longevity is strong at eight to ten hours, the spice-patchouli core persistent throughout.
