The category covers two distinct trees. Sweet orange (Citrus sinensis) yields the juicy, simple cologne opening, while bitter orange (Citrus aurantium) gives a more complex, greener oil with balsamic depth. Oils are cold-pressed from the rind in Italy, Spain, Brazil and the United States. Orange absolute, a rarer solvent-extracted material, adds a richer honeyed quality used in finer compositions.

Orange is a top note and one of perfumery's friendliest signatures. Perfumers use it to open colognes alongside bergamot and lemon, to soften heavier amber and gourmand bases, and to bring warmth to floral and woody accords.

Orange performs best in spring and summer and in daytime wear, though warmer interpretations extend comfortably into autumn evenings.
