It started in Italy in 2011 and, in its own words, "In 2022 Sospiro opened a new chapter, carried onto a global stage from Dubai." Who is Sospiro?

Sospiro is "the Italian word for a sigh," the house explains, "from the Latin suspirium, 'an upward breath.'" It was founded in 2011 by Sergio Momo, who also founded the Italian house Xerjoff. In his interviews with Fragrantica and ParfumPlus, he describes the idea as a collection with Italian and Mediterranean roots that speaks the language of classical music and opera.

The house's own summary of that idea: "take the Mediterranean tradition of fine perfumery and compose it the way Italy composes music, as opera, as symphony, in movements that build and resolve." It even treats the note pyramid as a score: "Top, heart and base are movements, an entrance, a development, a resolution."

Then there is the bottle. Sospiro describes a velvet flacon "finished like a butterfly's wing," the butterfly being "the house's emblem of love," with an engraved rose-gold cap. The bottle is instantly recognisable, and each colour belongs to a different scent.

Since 2022 the house has worked from Dubai, which Sospiro sums up as "Italian craft, Gulf stage, one fragrant language." It also describes itself as "known for projection and longevity."

1. Sospiro Erba Pura Magica

Sospiro Erba Pura Magica is the easiest Sospiro to love. The house lists jasmine, bergamot, lemon and fruity notes at the top, balsamic notes and orris at the heart, and amber, musk, caramel and cedarwood in the base. Bright fruit on a warm, sweet amber: that combination is what makes it such a crowd-pleaser.

Sospiro calls it "A radiant spell of joy and movement, unfolding like a playful aria that lifts the spirit." It belongs to the Erba Collection. The name has history: the original Sospiro Erba Pura launched in 2013, before the Erba Pura line moved to Xerjoff, the other house Sergio Momo founded. 2. Sospiro Vibrato

Sospiro Vibrato is the house's fresh signature, and Sospiro itself calls it "viral." It is one of the few Sospiro perfumes the house credits to a named perfumer: master perfumer Christian Provenzano, whom the brand describes as having "more than fifty years at the bench."

The brand lists grapefruit, bergamot, mandarin, ginger and rosemary at the top, magnolia, Damascena rose and blond wood at the heart, and vetiver, patchouli, Indian sandalwood, musk, crystal amber and tonka in the base, a "powdery-citrus" scent in the house's words. It is the Sospiro for daytime and for warm weather. 100 ml, AED 975.

3. Sospiro Basso

Sospiro Basso is named for the lowest singing voice, and it wears that way: deep, dry and woody. The brand lists grapefruit at the top, mayflower, carnation and labdanum at the heart, and a long base of sandalwood, vetiver, celery seeds, black and pink pepper, galbanum, nutmeg, guaiac wood, oakmoss and cedar.

Sospiro writes that it is "Born in the hush before a performance," rising "with depth and gravitas, resonant and commanding." Choose Basso if you like green, peppery woods more than sweetness. 100 ml, AED 950.

4. Sospiro Dolce Melodia

Sospiro Dolce Melodia, in the orange velvet bottle, is Sospiro's sweet floral. Mandarin, orange and saffron open it, rose, jasmine, gardenia, pear and blackcurrant form the heart, and sandalwood, vanilla and white musk settle underneath.

The house calls it "A melody of sweetness and seduction," and "impossibly addictive from first breath to last echo." It suits anyone who wants a fruity, creamy floral. 100 ml, AED 950.

5. Sospiro Contralto

Sospiro Contralto takes its name from the deepest female voice, and it is the Sospiro for spice lovers. Cloves, pink pepper and orange blossom lead, chestnut, guaiac wood and juniper follow, and vanilla, Peru balsam and cashmeran round it off.

Sospiro describes "A portrait of quiet strength and feminine resolve," "Both bold and comforting." It is warm and gourmand without being sugary, and a strong choice for cooler evenings. 100 ml, AED 875.

6. Sospiro Opera Grande

Sospiro Opera Grande is the house's most dramatic floral, and another Christian Provenzano creation. The brand lists fruity notes and Turkish rose at the top, ylang ylang, ambergris, leather and nutmeg at the heart, and Virginian cedarwood, patchouli, vanilla, vetiver and musk in the base. It is rose with leather and spice, rich enough for a night out. 100 ml, AED 1,050.
