Agarwood

Agarwood is the dark, resinous heartwood of the Aquilaria tree, formed only when the tree responds to fungal infection by producing a fragrant resin that saturates the wood. The resulting raw material, called oud, is among the most expensive natural ingredients in perfumery. Sustainable harvesting (now mandatory under CITES regulations) takes years per yield; the best Cambodian and Hindi distillates carry leather, smoke, and animalic warmth that anchor a composition for hours.
