Petitgrain fragrance note icon

Petitgrain smells green, woody and bittersweet, like bitter orange with an extra leafy twist. It is sharper than neroli but shares the same botanical source and occupies a distinct space between citrus and herb.

The oil is steam-distilled from the leaves and young twigs of the bitter orange tree (Citrus aurantium), mainly in Paraguay and Tunisia. Paraguayan petitgrain is the industry reference: drier, greener and more bitter. Separate distillations yield petitgrain mandarin, petitgrain lemon and petitgrain bergamot, each carrying the signature green facet of its parent tree with characteristic citrus nuances.

Petitgrain sits between top and heart. Perfumers use it as a central ingredient in classic eaux de cologne alongside bergamot, neroli and lemon, to add green lift to aromatic fougeres, and to bring dry freshness to modern woody-citrus compositions. It pairs naturally with lavender, rosemary, vetiver and clean musks.

Petitgrain performs best in spring and summer, hot climates and daytime wear, and suits unisex colognes beautifully.
