Juniper Perfumes & Fragrances

The raw material comes from Juniperus communis, a coniferous shrub native to cool northern hemispheres. Two materials are used. Juniper berry oil is steam-distilled from the dark blue cones (which take two to three years to ripen), yielding a pale oil rich in alpha-pinene, myrcene and limonene. Juniper wood and branch oil is distilled from twigs and wood, giving a woodier, drier character. Juniper berries are the defining botanical of gin and appear in Italian grappa and Nordic cooking.

Juniper is a top note with heart-level persistence. Perfumers use it to add crisp aromatic lift to fougeres and colognes (Penhaligon's Juniper Sling, Creed Silver Mountain Water), to bridge citrus and woody bases, and to give masculine fragrance an outdoorsy, gin-bar freshness. It pairs beautifully with lavender, cypress, vetiver and iso e super.

Juniper performs best in spring, autumn and daytime wear.
