The material is a waxy secretion from the digestive system of sperm whales, expelled at sea and aged for years by sun and saltwater until it hardens into floating grey lumps. Fresh ambergris smells faecal; only long-aged pieces develop the prized scent. Trade is legal in most countries (the UAE, UK, EU) but banned in the United States. Most modern perfumery relies on synthetic substitutes like Ambroxan, Cetalox and Ambrocenide, which reproduce the key facets with greater consistency and ethics.

Ambergris is a base note and the ultimate fixative. Perfumers use it to add radiance and skin-close warmth to florals, marines and woody compositions, to smooth oud and leather, and to extend the life of any fragrance it touches.
