Coconut Perfumes & Fragrances

Natural coconut oil is largely odourless when refined, so perfumers build the note from lactones. The key molecule is gamma-nonalactone (aldehyde C18, also called coconut aldehyde), synthesised since the early twentieth century, supported by delta- and gamma-decalactones for creamier and more complex effects. A natural coconut CO2 extract exists but is rarely used because synthetics give better performance and consistency.

Coconut is a heart note with good persistence. Perfumers use it to add creamy tropical warmth to vacation-themed compositions (Bobbi Brown Beach, Estee Lauder Bronze Goddess, Tom Ford Soleil Blanc), to sweeten vanilla and tonka gourmands, and to give modern florals a suntan-oil indulgence. It pairs beautifully with vanilla, jasmine, tiare, tuberose and sandalwood.

Coconut performs best in warm weather and holiday signatures.
