Artemisia (Artemisia absinthium and related species) is the herbaceous group that gives absinthe its bitter character. Steam-distilled artemisia oil smells sharp, dry, slightly camphor-edged, and unmistakably green with a smoky herb undertone. The note has been used in classical fougeres since the late 19th century (Houbigant Fougere Royale, 1882, helped establish the entire genre) and continues to appear in modern aromatic compositions. It anchors the green-bitter character of Givenchy Gentleman Society, Dior Sauvage Elixir, Le Labo Geranium 30, and several Frederic Malle releases. Artemisia pairs especially well with lavender, oakmoss, coumarin, geranium, and vetiver for masculine and unisex fougere structures. Wears best in cool-temperate weather; reads slightly louder on warm skin. Browse artemisia-led fragrances at the artemisia collection.
