Ginger Perfumes & Fragrances

The raw material is the rhizome of Zingiber officinale, grown mainly in India, China, Nigeria and Jamaica. Fresh ginger yields an essential oil via steam distillation, dominated by zingiberene and citrus-tinged sesquiterpenes. CO2 extraction produces a fuller, more realistic material with the lemony-peppery top intact. Dried ginger is more pungent and less bright.

Ginger sits between top and heart. Perfumers use it to electrify citrus openings, to add bite to aromatic and marine compositions (Issey Miyake L'Eau Bleue, Acqua di Gio Profumo), and to give modern spicy-woody masculines a clean energetic lift. It pairs beautifully with bergamot, cardamom, vetiver and iso e super.

Ginger performs best in spring, summer and daytime wear, though warmer gingerbread interpretations extend into winter gourmands.
