The marine-notes family in modern perfumery traces back to a single molecule: Calone 1951, synthesised in the Pfizer laboratories in the year of its name. Calone smells like sea spray, melon rind, and ozone in roughly equal measure, and its discovery enabled the entire aquatic-fragrance category of the 1990s (Issey Miyake L'Eau d'Issey, Davidoff Cool Water). Modern marine accords usually combine Calone with helional, dihydromyrcenol, and small fractions of seaweed absolute for a more nuanced reading. Fragrance Du Bois London Spice at Parfum Central uses marine notes to lift its spice-and-oud base.
