Oak

Oak in perfumery is rarely the raw wood itself; it is most often a constructed accord built from oak moss (Evernia prunastri), oak absolute, or whisky-barrel-derived lactones that carry the same tannic, vanilla-tinged warmth as actual cooper-aged oak. The note functions as a structural backbone, lending dryness and a slight woody-sweet character without the resinous depth of cedar or the smoke of vetiver. Heritage chypres relied on oak moss until IFRA restrictions in 2014; modern compositions use the lighter Treemoss substitute.
