Styrax is the balsamic resin harvested from the bark wounds of Liquidambar orientalis (Levant styrax) or Liquidambar styraciflua (American styrax). The crude resin is steam-distilled to produce styrax oil, which smells warm, sweet, slightly leathery, and unmistakably animalic, with cinnamic and vanillic facets that make it a natural amber-base companion. Perfumers use it to bridge cinnamon, vanilla, and leather accords. Styrax appears in many classical orientals including Guerlain Jicky, Caron Tabac Blond, and Roja Parfums releases that draw on heritage leather-amber territory. It pairs well with labdanum, benzoin, vanilla, and oakmoss for opoponax-adjacent oriental bases. Wears best in autumn evenings and cool-weather wear.
