Bitter orange smells sharper, greener and more floral than sweet orange, with a balsamic undertone that gives compositions more character than standard citrus allows.

The tree is Citrus aurantium, grown mainly in Paraguay, Tunisia, Spain and Italy. It is one of the most generous plants in perfumery: rind yields bitter orange oil (also called bigarade), blossoms yield neroli by steam distillation and orange blossom absolute by solvent extraction, and leaves and twigs yield petitgrain. The same tree gives three distinct perfumery materials, each with the characteristic green-bitter signature.

Bitter orange is a top note with balsamic depth. Perfumers use it in classic eaux de cologne alongside bergamot and neroli, to add complexity to amber and oriental openings, and to bring sophisticated citrus lift to modern woody-floral compositions. It pairs naturally with lavender, rosemary, rose and leather.

Bitter orange performs best in spring, summer and warm transitional weather, and suits unisex colognes and refined daytime signatures.
